The Boone County Coroner's Office exists to provide the people of Boone County with a thorough investigation in the event of a death pursuant to the Illinois State Statute. The Coroner's Office is a law enforcement agency, which, as part of a system of checks and balances, investigates deaths that occur in the county elected. The investigation may include, but is not limited to, autopsy, toxicology tests, metabolic studies, X-rays, entomological studies, and personal, as well as psychiatric history. These procedures are done to determine the manner and cause of death.
Coroner responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Respond or dispatch Deputy Coroner to death scene
- Conduct death investigation
- Make death notification to next of kin
- Determine necessity for autopsy
- Coordinate transportation of deceased from death scene
- Collect toxicological samples and submit for analysis
- Coordinate and facilitate tissue and bone donation
- Facilitate autopsy process
- Issue Temporary Death Certificates
- Issue Permanent Death Certificates
- Facilitate burial of indigent
- Issue Cremation Permits
- Maintain records of all deaths reported
- Maintain permanent record of all inquested cases
- Maintain vital statistics related to all cases reported
- Take charge of personal property of a deceased person until it can be released
- Be prepared for any disaster situation
- Be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
