Where Do My Taxes Go?

Within every county, there are a variety of "Taxing Districts" which are given the authority by State Statute to levy taxes. Some of these districts overlap each other. Included among these districts are municipalities (cities & towns), the county, school districts, library districts, park districts, conservation districts, fire districts and others. These "taxing districts" determine and set their individual levy amounts (Tax Rates) based upon the services and programs they provide to tax payers. These levy amounts are itemized on your tax bill by each individual taxing district which affects your property. They are listed both as a percentage and also as a dollar amount on your tax bill. In the Sample Tax Bill below, you see actual tax rates levyed and the taxes due for a parcel located in Belvidere, Illinois for its 2000 taxes, payable in 2001.

The total amount of taxes due is the total Tax Rate times your Taxable Value as listed on your tax bill. REMEMBER: The Tax Rate is a percentage, so move your decimal point two places to the left when multiplying!
FOR EXAMPLE:
Tax Rate x Taxable Value = $ Amount Taxes Due

In this example, the County Tax Rate is = .7535 so...

.007353 (Tax Rate) X $29,712.00 (Taxable Value) = $223.88

This property's taxes were allocated as follows.

The actual percentages of how amounts are allocated will vary somewhat with each tax bill depending upon how many different taxing districts are listed on the tax bill. To find how your taxes are being allocated by taxing district, use the following formula.

Dollar amount for each District ÷ Total Taxes Due = % allocated to that District

For Example: County = $223.88 ÷ $2,217.88 = 9.85%
